This fable evokes a
strong and palpable moral paradigm that leaves much room for a creator to
explore. One does not often get a chance to work on as clear a narrative
line as this. It is, therefore, a daunting prospect. My intention in this
work is to try and possibly weave a panoramic tale of an African flatland.
My interest is to locate a moment. The moment that unlocks the marrow of
the tale. I have chosen to transpose the "Stag" with the Gazelle
because that has much more resonance with me. My favourite animal in the
wild is the Cheetah and it is primarily due to my fascination with this
elegant, graceful cat that I have witnessed its perilous relationship with
the Thomson's Gazelle. However, the point is to tell the story of one Gazelle's
deadly miscalculation in an ambiance of constant threat and danger. The challenge is, of course, to evoke the tension and colour of the vast landscape with two bodies. That is however the best part of the process. I hope to reveal, through one animal's perilous gamble, the spirit of survival that resonates instinctively in all who tread the African plain. |
